Express, who do you think you are?

I am by no means an Express hater, I just hate their price points. Case in point - I've blogged about 3 dresses I bought from Express in the past month. The only reason I even bought those dresses was because 2 were on sale and I got 2 "Express Cash" coupons for my purchases.

The coupons were $25 off a $50 purchase and I went promptly after work on Friday to spend them before they expired. I ended up buying this dress in blue and black and a pair of plain black yoga pants that were on sale.
When I started my shopping, I quickly realized I wasn't going to be walking out of their with much.  Sad face.  I'm not kidding when I tell you everything in that store was outrageously priced. Don't even get me started on their jewlery. Some chincy black plastic flower ring that I wouldn't even pay $5 for at Forever 21 was almost $30! Umm who lied to you Express?

Those 2 dresses were regulary priced $39.90 each, but with my coupons they were only $19.95 each.  Yes they're cute, but would I ever pay almost $80 for two very plain, nothing special, cotton dresses? Hell to the no. I could go to Old Navy and get the same quality for much less. Look at these cute, affordable summer dress alternatives from Old Navy.  All under $25.

I was highly disturbed that people pay Express prices.  Please tell me you know better and would only shop at Express with coupons or if something was on sale?  I'm not cheap (maybe a little), but if I'm going to spend money on clothes it better be so over-the-top cute you can't live with out it and know you'll turn heads plus great quality.

The moral of my story is that you CAN find cute clothes for a great price.  Don't waste your money on something that's not worth it.  Capeesh?

  2. so true! express is sooo overpriced. i feel the same about gap and j crew - who would pay $45 for a plain v-neck tee. i bought that same black dress you bought on sale too! ha! twiiiiins!

  3. Thank you for this post! I ALWAYS say that Express is way overpriced and the quality does not match the price! Cute dresses from Old Navy!

You're awesome, Ms. Bargain Blonde! :)

  5. haha I feel you! I've NEVER bought an item from Express! I've got clothes from there that were thrifted but that's it :) It's Forever 21 quality - but high end prices. Sorry, I'm not paying that for a stupid label!

  6. Every time I go in there I end up hating express more and more. I only like to go in there when they have the 'box' sale. I've gotten some cute tops from that, but otherwise they can stuff it.

  7. I'm a new follower from Raven's blog. :)

I agree. I do a lot of Old Navy shopping, and lately I feel like even their stuff is overpriced...I mean, for simple dresses, I shouldn't have to pay $30. Or did I suddenly get cheap?

  8. I 100% agree!!! Even their sale stuff is still 50$ I'm like hellloooo...you're kinda like a glorified Forever 21. I only say that because a shirt I got from there started to shred..bad bad bad!

  9. I LOVE Express clothes but I never pay full price.. I just can't do it! I like to have LOTS of lower priced clothes than 1 shirt from a good brand.

  10. Agreed! It's a shame that their prices are so ridiculous because they have a lot of pretty suits and blouses that would be great for work. However, I can find the same thing for half the price at other stores, and even at Ross! Their pants and skirts also have a really weird fit on me, so I guess it's just not meant to be!

  11. When I want to splurge, I don't think about Express... you only have to look out for their sales!

  12. i used to work at express way back in the day, and i feel like their prices really have skyrocketed over the years. so sad, cuz sometimes they really do have some cute stuff.

we were in there the other day when the BF bought 2 pairs of shorts for $100. ummm... $50 for COTTON shorts. he swears up and down though that they were the only ones that fit him perfectly... i thought he was nuts honestly. but they had some scam going where it was "Buy 1 pair, get the 2nd for $30" which, then of COURSE your gonna buy the second pair because the 1 pair was $70! He was only going to get the 1 pair, and i was like um, at least drop the $30 for the second pair so the price goes to $50 for each... either way you look at it, it was ridiculous.

  13. Love Express hate their prices! I don't fit into Express clothes right now, I got fat. Homeever, their black leggings are the leggings I only buy/wear. You know, the $24.50 once, & they are always buy one, get the 2nd half off...Love those! However, recently, those same plain leggings went up $5.00! They are now $29.50. Before, I can get two of those with my coupon for $24.00 w/taxes. Now its over $30, beyond pissed. I asked my friends that work at Express, they told me, everything pretty much went up in price from $5-$10, Express wanted to see if people still bought their clothes...& they still are. Um yeah, I am gonna wait until I am back to my Express size/the box sale to buy clothes from there.

    Thank god for H&M!

  15. Totes!!! I've had numerous things from there that have fallen apart. The quality is def not worth the prices.

  16. TOTALLY agree with you! I think Express is SO overpriced! You can find the exact same if not cuter dresses at f21!

  17. Express! Ugh! I used to shop there with coupons, but I rarely do anymore unless I am looking at something specific from them. Not only are they expensive, I have several things from them that have fallen apart. Also, they never seem to have my size. Always a size below and a size above.

  18. agreed 100%!!! i don't even shop there anymore... its redick!

  19. i thought i was the only one who felt this strongly about a place i once frequented. ABSURD! is the only word i can come up with about their prices. i hope they soon recognize! until then... i'm NOT an Express shopper.

  20. these dresses are way cute! I love that you can find adorable stuff at ON for great prices.... P.S. I not a huge fan of Express... bad experiences with everything shrinking unless it's dry cleaned...not very good quality for the price.

  21. You take the words out of my mouth and I think I am now in love with you. :-)

I NEVER pay full price for anything at Express, I use to when they had nicer stuff, but lately I haven't found a single thing that is worth their outrageous prices. Also a bunch of their coupons now do not work on sale items... so it will be 30 off of a 70 but then you end up buying two things and still spending more then 40 bucks... boo.

  22. i hate Express. For this exact reason! Theyr overpriced, and thats an understatement! And the quality isnt even thaaat great! I dont even glance at the store when im in the mall anymore.
    xoxo Inna :)

  23. im glad you posted this! i think express is HIGHLY overpriced for the quality of clothes you get...and i think old navy has nearly the same stuff for half the price!

  24. I used to shop at Express in high school and college, in fact, that was where I opened my first real "credit card." Before long I realized how overpriced they were and that it was stupid to shop there! I do like some of their stuff (their jeans were my fave) but I don't shop there anymore. The dress that you got is cute though!

  25. I KNOW! Express is SO overpriced, when I can go right next door to forever, and buy like 5 things for the price of one Express item. You need to write a little letter to corporate! I mean, how do they keep up with everyone else and the economy?? Grrr.. although they do have such cute things :)

    xoxo
PS I drink out of Christmas mugs year round too! hahaha

  26. just realized i have not commented on this. you are now only 4 away from my 30 comment prediction.

i do not like express. mainly b/c my roommate gets all her clothes from there and i don't want to dress like her. it's so generic. some of there stuff is cute, but i rarely spend $$ there unless i have one of those coupons.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I totally agree. The only thing I ever purchase from there are my work dress pants. They just fit me perfect. I also never buy them full price. I wait until I get my coupons in the mail and then I go buy them! Express needs a reality check. There clothes are not that good to be priced that high!

  28. Ugh, I completely and totally agree with this post! I'm 28 years old, I have a good job, and I have no problem paying top price for things that are worth it. That said, the vast majority of the clothes in my closet right now are from Old Navy, Target, or Kohl's. A while back someone posted pictures of an Express dress and I fell in love. I went to the website and it was over $100! No. Way.

  29. Agreed. Express is crazy expensive! (Although I must admit, I bought that blue dress you posted at full price.) The jewelry is insane! One of my fave places to buy jewelry is NY & Co. They have a ton of cute stuff, and it's always on sale.

  30. Every now and then Express will have an amazing sale, other than that I avoid it. It is totally overpriced for simple basics. However, I do love Express jeans.

  31. We don't have Express in Canada but maybe I'll check it out when I'm in the U.S. of A in a couple of weeks. Or maybe not, if it's really expensive!

  32. I sooo used to live in Express. During college, that was my staple .... even for jewelry .... but remember, I'm an oldie and xxi was not around then. I'd never pay those prices now. And their clothes are borderline skanktastic. LOL
