New room = hot mess

SOS!  If you walked into my new room right now, you'd definitely side-eye me.  I'm legit living out of plastic tubs and several suitcases.  It's not right, but try to judge me too harshly because I've only been home a few days since the move.
Yes, I'm living in squalor.
The thing is, I don't even know where to begin.  My current furniture (that's semi-falling apart) is not going to work, but it will have to do for now.  I refuse to put any clothes in my dressers because I don't know where I want them arranged.  Ma-ma, help me!!!

I keep brainstorming what I want to do though.  My old bedroom looked like this:

I'm over it.  I'm going to keep some elements because obviously I don't have the funds to start from scratch.

So here are my ideas that I'm not married to, but pretty set on.

1. I want chocolate brown and white as primary colors with a touch of green and/or pink to add a little pizaz.

2. I want lots of antique elements w/ a smidgen of modern mixed in.

3. I must have a vanity area. That is final.

4. Room must be cozy.

I'm envisioning something like this (courtesy of Pinterest):

And this:

I'm not head over heels with any of those rooms, but I love elements from each.  What do y'all think of white furniture?  I'm thinking of painting mine all white, but don't know about that either.  Seeeeee???  There are just so many decisions.

Who wants to come help me redecorate?  I'll be your best friend forever and ever.  Anyone ever re-done an entire room and how did you accomplish it?  #overwhelmedandneedadrinkjustthinkingaboutit

  1. do you know that the words "splash of color" seriously make me want to grate my knuckles over the cheese grater? I hate it.

On an unrelated note, "recital" is my favorite word. Just the way it flows.

Ok so anyway, if I come stay with you, I will help you decorate but can I sleep in your bed with you? It's big enough. I promise I won't try anything.

  2. i really like those rooms. they are all so similar in colors, but very different at the same time! i am in love with browns right now & am currently looking for a brown quilt to go on my bed! i would love to help you redecorate, but unfortunately you live so far away from me!!! lol

anywho, good luck with your decorating. can't wait to see the final outcome!

  3. I'm all about white everywhere, which is dangerous because my husband is a slob. If you still need help I'll be in Dallas for Halloween for the Ghostland concert and I'd be more than happy to help :)

    Until then, good luck!

  4. I love white furniture against darker walls. I know the feeling of living out of plastic bins....because we are still doing this in some rooms of our house even after we've been here for over 2 years...ugggh! I have had to redo every single room in the whole house and I just let things sit, and sit, and sit until I decide exactly how I want things. I say Pinterest for some good ideas!

  6. Wait, you moved? Whaaat?

My bedroom is the only room I never buy anything for. People mostly see the other rooms so I'm always more concerned with them. I need to start working on my bedroom though.

  7. I'd love to help redecorate! Just let me know a good time and I'll stop by ;) I think you've pulled some amazing inspiration and know what you're looking for. The hardest part is actually finding the items you want. I'm loving the chocolate brown walls!

    All-white furniture = yes.

Oh, and I'll also take that dresser in the second picture. No big deal. Hope you get situated soon... living out of suitcases/boxes is the absolute worst!!

  8. I will seriously come help you. Not joking. You can just direct me and we can brainstorm about what you wanna do design-wise.

You could totally re-paint all your furniture white or depending on the budget, you could probably find some new pieces for not much. I love all the pics you included. Very girly-modern.

Are you wanting to use some or all of the bed coverings from old room? Are y'all allowed to paint in the townhouse? I love the pic of the chocolate walls w/ the white closet doors. It's so clean looking!

  10. I recently painted all my furniture white and I love it! I went for a creamy color instead of stark white though.. but I say go for it!

  12. Love your chocolate brown comforter set! My last comforter was that type of material! I am in love with white on white rooms and I think the chocolate brown would make it verrry cozy! LOVE the idea of painting your furniture! I would start looking at consignment furniture shops that would look feminine and chic and you can PAINT them white!! I see alot of girls on blogs who are creative and can take other peoples junk and turn it into chic pieces! YOU could def do this! AND you can do a how-to blog....just saying! haha

PS - ya room looks like a BOMB went off hahahahaha I can say this because ....so does MINE.

  13. WHERE IS THE BAR?! Doesn't everybody have one in their room? No? And I assume you will be giving us a tour of your vanity once installed. I have a vision of it in my head, but can't post a pic here...lamesauce.

  14. Oh my word your poor thing! And your a gimp on top of that?! No bueno. I totally love the all white look- paint your walls like a deep chocolate and put some monster white crown molding - that would look so effing cute! I'm envious you have a blank slate to work with. We're prisoners in our own home until it sells! Lame

  21. i'm game to just come and throw back some beers while we pretend to think about it if you'd like. that's the kinda help i'm good for.

  22. Paint the furniture white then T-stain it!! It gives it a distressed look. (Ralph Lauren Feaux Finishings- Tea Stain)

  23. Haha! I totally relate! I just moved from MA to TX a week ago and I'm still half living out of my suitcase!!!!!! It'll come, enjoy!

  24. I love love love the brown and white trim look. I don't know if I'd have the balls to do a dark chocolatey brown, but more of a taupe with the clean white trim is still really pretty. (think the house in Life As We Know It...GORGEOUS!)

there are days that my house looks equally messy. domestic diva, I am NOT.

  25. hey, at least you have your priorities... US Weekly with Princess Kate next to the bed? perfection. that completely crosses out the "hot mess" you speak of. well done.

  26. I can relate to living out of boxes because I live out of a suitcase for my job! On a more positive note, I love the first room that you liked! The chair is super cute! I loved your old room too though! I'm sure you will do just fine regardless of your decision! Good luck! Can't wait to see what you decide!

  27. Okay, so I've painted a dresser white before. It was a ton of work, as we followed the directions of my aunt's husband, a professional painter. The dresser turned out awesome, but again, work. Now, I don't know anything about your furniture, if you love it and want to keep it forever, or if it's just for now. If it's just for now you can probably get away with sanding and painting, but if you want to keep long term you need to go through the whole sand, prime, maybe prime again, paint, paint again, etc. and there are different types of rollers you need for the steps. See - work. Good luck! And my vote is craiglist for white furniture. You'll save time and quite possibly money in the long run, especially if you factor in your time and emotional energy in the process. And you can always sell your current furniture to off set some costs :).

  28. I love the pop of white furniture against darker walls. I've been wanting to paint and antique my dresser forever but the thought of all the effort it would take just makes me cringe. My room is way messier than yours. And I didn't just move. I am ashamed.

  29. I need to decorate also. And I like white furniture.

    ReplyDelete
  30. that dresser is amazing!!!!! and atleast you had walking space in your hot mess room ;)

  31. I loved your old bedroom but I can understand changing it up and starting fresh with new design ideas! I really love all of your pins! They all seem cozy, yet have many beautiful elements! You are great at design and have great style so I'm sure whatever you do will look AMAZING!

  32. I say either paint your bedroom dark brown and your furniture white, or go with white walls and paint your furniture an expresso color!

  33. I LONG for comfy, cozy rooms. But mine never looks anything like the pictures. Like I said on twitter last night, the only DIY project I have EVER done before was the painting the furniture. But as for my own bedroom, it doesn't look the least bit cozy.

And what does it say about me that my bedroom looks like a hot mess and I've lived there for 2 years?

I probably shouldn't have just admitted that.

  34. Love the idea of all white furniture, and I LOVE that color brown on the walls and the splash of orange.

The first two pictures are prob my favorite.

  35. so here's what you do, paint your furniture white and do either an accent wall dark brown, or paint the whole thing a lighter shade of brown. then you get this vanity :) http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=17540297

  37. I love the brown & white together! I agree with the others...paint the walls a warm, chocolate brown...that will definitely make it cozy :)

  38. You have got to do your room in the dark walls/white furniture. It is TO. DIE. FOR. It is making want to paint something else. Hrmm. what room haven't I attacked with a paint brush yet? decisions decisions.

  39. Paint your furniture white. Love.
In the second photo, that 'vanity' looks like a piece of MDF set on top of 2 white sawhorses .... very cheap and cool way to make a table. This is what I'm making my craft room table out of .... whenever we can find a house.

If I had more time, I'd come over and totally overhaul that room of yours. Love doing that stuff ...

  40. ALL white furniture = DO IT.

Def. recommend it. I just did that with some pieces in our house (were black originally) and they look so much better & much more FRESHY FRESH. ;)

It is overwelming, isn't it? We are OLD. Atleast that's how I feel haha NEED more hours in the day......sigh....

  41. Love using brown in a bedroom! It makes it so warm and COZY! Your inspiration pics are pretty fabulous and now it makes me wanna overhaul my boudoir- ha!

If I lived close to ya, I'd come over and drink/redec. with you ; )

  44. Blondie, my room & the "office" room looks like this (but trust me much worse) since I got back from NYC...I am such a lazy ass...Love the color choices. I would say go with pink, love pink. However, I think turquoise & the chocolate brown will look amazing together.

    Have fun with it...
